Three drawing tools
Highlite has a freehand pen, an arrow tool and a shape tool. The pen follows your cursor for circling, underlining or scribbling. The arrow tool draws a straight arrow from where you press to where you release, which is the fastest way to point at an element. The shape tool draws rectangles and ellipses with a colored outline and no fill; hold Shift to constrain it to a square or a circle.
Color, thickness and editing
Every stroke uses the active color, from a palette of five, and one of four stroke widths. Drawings sit on a transparent layer over the page: the page underneath keeps working and is not modified. Switch to the Select tool to move a drawing, an arrow or a shape, resize a shape, or change the color and width of what you already drew. Undo and redo cover every stroke.
A laser pointer for calls
The same panel has a laser pointer (L) for pointing at a page while you share your screen. Each stroke fades after about two seconds and is never saved, so you can show something once without marking the page. When a point should stay for a screenshot or a follow-up, switch back to the arrow or the pen.
Built for screenshots
Drawings are the part of an annotation a screenshot shows best: a circle around the broken element and an arrow to the console error say more than a paragraph. Capture the viewport, the full scrollable page or a selected area with the drawings included, then download it as PNG or copy it to the clipboard.
What drawing & arrows does not do
- Drawings are placed relative to the page as it was laid out when you drew them. On a page that renders differently on the next visit (a different window width, a layout change, dynamic content), a drawing can end up next to the wrong element.
- Shapes are limited to rectangles and ellipses; there are no lines without arrowheads, polygons, callouts or a fill color.
- Shapes cannot be rotated. Freehand strokes and arrows can be moved but not resized.
- Drawings are stored in your browser only and are not synced or shared until you capture a screenshot or export them as JSON (Premium).
- Drawing is not available on browser-internal pages (chrome://, about:) or on the Chrome Web Store.
