Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Highlite. Can't find the answer you're looking for? Reach out to our support team.

How do I install Highlite?
Installing Highlite is simple! For Chrome: Go to the Chrome Web Store, search for 'Highlite', and click 'Add to Chrome'. For Firefox: Visit Firefox Add-ons, search for 'Highlite', and click 'Add to Firefox'. For Microsoft Edge: Visit Edge Add-ons, search for 'Highlite', and click 'Get'. On Brave, install the Chrome Web Store version — it works the same. The extension will be added to your browser toolbar, and you can start using it immediately on any webpage.
Is Highlite free to use?
Yes — annotating is free and will always be, with no sign-up and no credit card. The free plan includes all 10 annotation tools, unlimited annotations, every color and brush size, undo and redo, and screenshots you can download as PNG or copy to your clipboard. There is also an optional Premium plan for the features that send your annotations somewhere else.
What does Premium add?
Premium costs $4.99/month or $49.99/year. On top of everything in the free plan, it adds: Export your highlights and notes as Markdown; Export your annotations as JSON; Send annotated screenshots straight to Slack or Discord; Post them to your own webhook (Zapier, Make, n8n…); Every new destination as it ships; Priority support. Annotating a page stays free — Premium only covers what happens afterwards, when you export or send what you annotated.
Do I need an account to use Highlite?
Not for the free plan: install the extension and start annotating, with no sign-up and no email. Premium needs a Highlite account, created with Google sign-in, because the subscription has to belong to someone. Your annotations still stay in your browser — the account only carries the subscription.
Can I cancel Premium anytime?
Yes. Cancel from your billing page whenever you want: Premium stays active until the end of the period you already paid for, then your account goes back to the free plan. Nothing is deleted — your annotations live in your browser, not on our servers, and every annotation tool stays available for free.
What browsers are supported?
Highlite is available for Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Brave (which runs the Chrome Web Store build). Annotating works the same everywhere, and so does Premium: signing in, exporting annotations as Markdown or JSON and sending screenshots to Slack, Discord or a webhook work on every one of these browsers. We support the latest versions of these browsers to ensure the best performance and compatibility.
Can I share my annotations with others?
Yes. Capture the visible viewport, the full scrollable page or just an area you select, then download the screenshot or copy it straight to your clipboard and paste it into Slack, a ticket, an email, or a doc — annotations included. That covers the free plan. With Premium you can also send the screenshot to a Slack or Discord channel, or to your own webhook for Zapier, Make or n8n, without leaving the page, and export the annotations themselves as a JSON file.
How do I organize my highlights and annotations?
Annotations stay on the page where you made them: reopen that URL and they are still there, so the page itself is the folder. Within a page you can color-code in any color, move or resize anything with the Select tool, undo and redo, erase one annotation at a time, or reset the page. There is no collections, tags, or cross-page search feature — Highlite is built for marking up a page and sending it, not for building an annotation library.
Does Highlite work offline?
Yes! Once you've highlighted or annotated a page, your annotations are saved locally in your browser. You can view and edit your existing annotations even when offline. Since all data is stored locally in your browser, you don't need an internet connection to access or modify your annotations.
Can I export my annotations?
Three ways, for three different needs. A screenshot of the annotated page — viewport, full page or selected area, downloaded as PNG or copied to your clipboard — is free. Copying or downloading your highlights and notes as Markdown, in the order they appear on the page, gives you text to paste into a notes app; it is a Premium feature. Exporting the annotations as a JSON file, which you can re-import later to put them back on the page, is a Premium feature. Importing a JSON file is free, so anyone can open a file a Premium user sent them.
Is my data private and secure?
Your annotations, highlights, sticky notes, and drawings are stored in your browser, on your machine. Your annotations never reach our servers, so we cannot read them. What does leave your browser: a screenshot you send to Slack, Discord or your own webhook with Premium (Discord and webhook sends go straight from your browser, never through us), the email address you use to sign in and pay, and anonymous usage statistics (for example "a screenshot was taken") that never include page addresses, page content or what you write. Firefox sends no statistics. You can delete everything at any time from the extension's reset button or your browser's storage settings.
Can I use different colors for highlighting?
Yes — any color, from a ready-made palette or the custom color picker, and four brush sizes, on every plan. Use them to separate types of feedback: yellow for what matters most, pink for what is broken, blue for questions. The same palette applies to highlights, sticky notes, drawings, arrows, and shapes.
How do sticky notes work in Highlite?
Sticky notes in Highlite work just like physical sticky notes. Click the sticky note icon, place it anywhere on the webpage, and start typing your thoughts. You can move, resize, edit, or delete sticky notes at any time. They're perfect for adding contextual comments without modifying the original content.
Can I use Highlite for team collaboration?
Yes, for the round trip that most feedback actually is: you annotate a page, capture it, and send the screenshot to the person who has to act on it — a design review, a bug report, a content pass. It is not a shared canvas, though. Annotations live in the browser of whoever made them, so teammates don't see each other's notes in real time; what you share is the captured result, by clipboard, file, or with Premium a Slack or Discord channel or a webhook.
Does Highlite slow down my browser?
No, Highlite is designed to be lightweight and efficient. It only activates on pages where you use it and has minimal impact on browser performance. We've optimized the extension to ensure fast loading times and smooth operation even on complex webpages.
Can I use Highlite on any website?
Highlite works on almost all websites! You can highlight, annotate, and add notes to news articles, blog posts, documentation, research papers, and more. Some secure pages (like banking sites) may have restrictions for security reasons, but it works on the vast majority of public websites.
How do I remove Highlite if I want to uninstall it?
You can easily uninstall Highlite from your browser's extension management page. In Chrome: Go to chrome://extensions, find Highlite, and click 'Remove'. In Firefox: Go to about:addons, find Highlite, and click 'Remove'. Your local annotations are deleted with it, so capture a screenshot of anything you want to keep first — or export it as JSON if you have Premium. Uninstalling the extension does not cancel a Premium subscription: cancel it from your billing page.
Can I sync my annotations across multiple devices?
No, and Premium doesn't change that: Highlite stores annotations locally in your browser, with no cloud copy to sync from. To move annotations to another device, export them as JSON with Premium and import the file there.
