One palette, every tool

The palette has eight colors: yellow, pink, orange, green, blue, purple, black and white. Highlights get all of them except white, which would vanish on the page. For anything else, the custom swatch opens your system color picker, and the last three colors you picked stay next to the palette. Colors and sizes sit in the panel that opens when a tool is armed or an annotation is selected. Sticky notes and highlights keep one color, text boxes, the pen, arrows and shapes keep another, so a yellow note does not turn your next arrow yellow.

Four sizes

Next to the colors, a size picker offers four steps, S to XL. For sticky notes and text boxes it sets the font size; for the pen, arrows and shapes it sets the stroke width. Both color and size can be changed after the fact: select an existing annotation and pick a new value.

Using color as a legend

A handful of colors is enough for a legend that a whole team reads at a glance: yellow for what matters most, pink for what is broken, blue for questions, green for approved, orange for content changes. Because the colors are the same on every page and in every screenshot, the legend keeps working outside Highlite, in the Slack thread or the ticket where the screenshot ends up.

What color palette does not do

• There is no opacity setting. Custom colors are kept per device: the last three are remembered, older ones drop off the panel.
• Colors carry no built-in meaning: there are no labels, tags or filters attached to a color. The legend lives in your head or in your team conventions.
• The four sizes are steps, not a free value. Font sizes and stroke widths cannot be set to an arbitrary number.
