What Highlite does on Chrome
Once installed, click the Highlite icon on any page to open the toolbar. Highlight text, place sticky notes and text boxes, draw freehand, add arrows and shapes, in five colors and four sizes, with undo and redo. Everything is saved in Chrome, tied to the page URL, and restored when you come back. Capture the viewport or a selected area and download it as PNG or copy it to the clipboard to paste into Slack, Jira or a doc.
Premium on Chrome
Chrome is the reference build: every feature ships here first. With a Premium plan and a Highlite account (Google sign-in) you can send an annotated screenshot to a Slack channel from the toolbar and export the annotations of a page as a JSON file. Importing a JSON file is free for everyone.
Permissions and privacy
Highlite asks for the permissions it needs to inject its toolbar on the active tab, save annotations locally, download screenshots and, if you sign in, open the sign-in window. It runs inside an isolated container on the page so the site styles and the extension never interfere. It does not read your browsing history, and no annotation is sent to a server unless you deliberately send a screenshot to Slack.
Limitations on Chrome
- Highlite cannot run on browser-internal pages (chrome://) or on extension store pages; the icon is grayed out there.
- Annotations are stored in this browser profile only. They are not synced to another device or another browser, and uninstalling the extension deletes them.
- Annotations are positioned on the page as it was laid out when you made them. A page that renders differently later, or content generated dynamically, can shift or lose an annotation.
- Highlite works in the current version of Chrome. Very old versions without Manifest V3 support are not supported.
