How to install Highlite in Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Brave

Steps
- Open the store for your browser: the Chrome Web Store for Chrome and Brave, Firefox Add-ons for Firefox, or Edge Add-ons for Microsoft Edge. The Browsers page links to each one.
- On the Highlite listing, click Add to Chrome, Add to Firefox or Get, depending on the store.
- Accept the permission prompt. Highlite asks for access to the active tab, local storage and downloads, plus the sign-in window if you later use a Premium account.
- Pin the icon so it stays visible in the browser toolbar (see below).
- Open any webpage and click the Highlite icon. The toolbar appears on the page and you can start annotating.
Pin the Highlite icon
New extensions often land in the extensions menu instead of the toolbar. In Chrome and Brave, click the puzzle-piece Extensions button, then the pin next to Highlite. In Firefox, open the Extensions button, then the menu next to Highlite and choose Pin to Toolbar. In Edge, open Extensions and click the eye icon next to Highlite to show it in the toolbar.
Turning Highlite on and off
The icon is a switch for the current tab. Click it once and the toolbar opens on the page; click it again and it closes. Highlite stays on for that tab when you reload the page, and starts off again in new tabs and after a browser restart.
Click the Highlite logo at the left of the toolbar to shrink it to a small round button when it covers something. Click that button to bring the toolbar back.
Limitations
- Highlite is a desktop extension. Firefox for Android and Brave on Android or iOS are not supported.
- Brave has no store of its own: it installs the Chrome Web Store build, which works the same way.
- Annotating needs no account. The Premium plan, and the sign-in it requires, are not available on the Edge build yet.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account to use Highlite?
No. Install the extension and click its icon on any page. Every annotation tool and screenshots are free without an account. An account (Google sign-in) is only needed for Premium, which adds JSON export and sending screenshots to Slack.
How do I install Highlite on Brave?
Open the Highlite listing on the Chrome Web Store in Brave and click Add to Chrome. Brave runs Chrome Web Store extensions, so you get the same build as Chrome users.
Is there a Highlite app for Android or iPhone?
No. Highlite runs on desktop browsers only: Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge and Brave on Windows, macOS, Linux and ChromeOS. Firefox for Android is not supported.
