How to export highlights and notes to Markdown
Updated
Export to Markdown
- Highlight the passages you want to keep, and add sticky notes or text boxes for your own comments.
- Open the Export panel with Export or Ctrl+Shift+E (Cmd+Shift+E on Mac).
- In the Annotations section, click Copy (Markdown) or Download (Markdown). Without Premium, the upgrade screen opens first, and the export runs once you have upgraded.
- Paste the text into your notes app, or find the file in your downloads folder with a name like highlite-annotations-example.com-2026-10-24.md.
What the file contains
The page title as a heading, the page address, and the export date. Then every highlight as a quote and every sticky note or text box as a paragraph, from the top of the page to the bottom, so a note sits right after the passage it comments on.
The address is the one you read, without tracking parameters such as utm_source. The Markdown is plain: it pastes as-is into Obsidian, Notion, Logseq, Bear, a GitHub issue or a text file.
Markdown or JSON?
Markdown is for reading and writing: it keeps the words, not the page, and cannot be imported back. To move annotations you can keep editing, including drawings and arrows, use the JSON export.
Limitations
- Export needs Premium and a Highlite account.
- Only text is exported: drawings, arrows and shapes are left out.
- A Markdown export cannot be imported back into Highlite.
- An export covers one page. There is no export of every annotated page at once.
Premium is an optional plan ($4.99/month or $49.99/year) that adds Markdown and JSON export and sending screenshots to Slack, Discord or a webhook. Every annotation tool and screenshots stay free. See pricing
Frequently asked questions
Why are the Markdown buttons greyed out?
The page has no highlight, sticky note or text box with text in it yet. Drawings, arrows and shapes have no text to export.
Can I paste the export into Obsidian or Notion?
Yes. Highlights arrive as quotes and notes as paragraphs, with the page title as a heading and a link to the page.
In what order are the annotations?
In the order they sit on the page, top to bottom, then left to right, not the order you made them in.
